88 new cases of COVID-19, 1 death reported in Manitoba


There are 88 new cases of COVID-19 and one additional death reported in Manitoba on Friday.

Among the latest cases, 53 involve unvaccinated people, while 12 people were partially vaccinated and 23 were fully vaccinated.

While some people on double doses get COVID-19, most do not get seriously ill.

Only five percent of hospitalized Manitobans are fully immunized and none of them are in intensive care, according to data from the Province’s COVID-19 Dashboard.

The Southern Health Region, which has lowest vaccination rate in the province, again leading with 30 of the cases, followed closely by the Winnipeg Health Region with 26.

Prairie Mountain Health Region and Entre-les-Lacs and Eastern Health Region both have 14, while Northern Health Region has four.

There are 72 people hospitalized with COVID – 37 with active symptoms and 35 who are no longer contagious. Of the 37 active cases, 73 percent are unvaccinated while 22 percent are partially vaccinated and only five percent are fully vaccinated. (Government of Manitoba)

The latest data also shows a jump in hospitalizations. There are now 72 people hospitalized because of the coronavirus, up from 62 on Thursday.

Of these, 13 people are in intensive care, an increase.

The Manitoba government is no longer holding press conferences or sending out press releases on Fridays to update case numbers. Press releases are sent out on Mondays and Thursdays.

Therefore, no information on the last death – sex, age or health region – is available.

The total number of deaths in Manitoba from COVID-19 is now 1,203, including 201 linked to variants of the coronavirus.

The five-day test positivity rate in the province is 2.6%, up slightly from 2.5% on Thursday. No new information on the Winnipeg test’s positivity rate is provided on the COVID-19 dashboard. That rate was 1.2% on Thursday.

There were 2,668 lab tests performed on Thursday, bringing the total number since early February 2020 to 962,409.

Manitoba has also reported that 63 more cases of COVID-19 have been linked to variants of the coronavirus of concern.

All but one are still listed as unspecified variants on the province’s online variant dashboard. The only one that has been newly classified is listed as belonging to strain delta or B.1.617.2.

Manitoba has now recorded 1,314 cases of delta.

Of the 629 currently active COVID-19 cases in Manitoba, 390 have been identified as one of the most contagious strains.
