Canada eases restrictions but advises unvaccinated people to avoid travel

Things are looking up again for travel, but the Canadian government suggests unvaccinated residents should wait to book international vacations for now.

As the ban on non-essential travel was lifted, people headed into March Break and Pearson airport got busy again. There is also news today that Canada will no longer require any type of COVID-19 test on arrival.

Travel around the world has opened up in places such as EuropeAustralia and the Philippines — but only for vaccinated travellers.

And the federal government is advising unvaccinated residents to avoid non-essential travel.

Canada is now at a Level 2 risk levelwhich means that travelers “take special health precautions, such as receiving additional vaccinations”.

Hong Kong and China, for example, are returning to lockdowns as they are see an increase in cases at present.

Canada advises travelers to complete the COVID-19 vaccine series as well as any additional booster shots at least 14 days before travel.

“Anyone who has not completed a series of COVID-19 vaccines should continue to avoid non-essential travel to all destinations. If you must travel, consider delaying your plans until you are fully vaccinated,” the Canadian government’s international travel advisory indicates.

If you’ve booked travel, the federal government suggests monitoring the situation at your destination in the days leading up to travel. Requirements for re-entry to Canada could also suddenly change, as we have seen in the past.

Also, make sure your travel insurance covers medical expenses related to COVID-19 and trip interruption.

There is a risk of delays, which could impact travel budgets with longer hotel stays and rebookings of flights.

While there are plenty of cheap flights and airlines enticing people to return to travel, it’s worth noting the hassle this could entail, especially for unvaccinated people.
