Sensory-Friendly COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics Arrive in Waterloo Region, Guelph
The COVID-19 vaccination process can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are a child or teenager.
Now, a new collaboration hopes to make that process a bit easier by offering sensory vaccination clinics.
KidsAbility, an organization that provides support programs for families and children, has partnered with Waterloo Region Public Health and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health to organize sense-friendly clinics at its sites. premises from this month.
The clinics cater specifically to children five to 17 years old in Waterloo region and five to 11 years old in Guelph.
“There will be less movement around… They are making this appointment with a little more time for these children, so that hopefully the children can be calm and ready for their vaccination,” said Linda Kenny, CEO by KidsAbility.
Clinics will have fewer people and less noise, compared to mass vaccination sites.
Families will be able to go to a room together for the duration of the appointment, and the person doing the vaccination will come to them, instead of going to the stations.
Location and registration
Immunization clinics will be located at nine of KidsAbility’s sites located in Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. Public health staff will run the clinics with the help of KidsAbility volunteers.
“Our staff will volunteer their time to come and help the children, so I hope some of the faces they see will be familiar and friendly to them,” Kenny said. “And I think we are able to offer that in a very child-friendly environment, very focused on children for whom the experience could be very overwhelming in a more traditional immunization clinic.”
She said many children will be clients of the organization, but the clinic is open to anyone who is eligible and needs accommodation.
Clinics are by appointment only. Registration is now open.
Parents with several children can register them for the same time slot and the same room.
