UBC defends title, crowned 2021 Canada West Women’s Golf Champion

SQUAMISH, BC – The UBC Thunderbirds women’s golf team is the 2021 Canada West champion, successfully defending their 2019 title.

Shooting a team of 3 above par 219 on Tuesday at a stormy Squamish Valley golf course, the Thunderbirds finished the tournament in two rounds 27 strokes ahead of the UBC Okanagan finalists.

With five golfers in the top six, the T-Birds were led by Grace Bell who won the first individual title of his career at UBC, finishing under one after a par of 72 on Tuesday, five strokes ahead of Sukriti Harjai of the University of Victoria.

Bell was the leader after Monday’s first round with a 71, the only golfer to score under par in the 36-hole tournament.

Sonja tang shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish in a three-way tie for third place with other Thunderbirds Emilie Li and Una Chou who scored a 74 and a 76, respectively, in the final round.

Bo Brown finished the tournament 6 above par, good for sixth place as UBC topped the field of 34 golfers.

With the victory, the Thunderbirds have now won all four tournaments they’ve entered to start the 2021-22 golf season, two each in the Canada West Conference and Cascade Collegiate. The ‘Birds also remain the only program to win the Canada West banner after winning the inaugural event in 2019 in Kelowna.

The T-Birds remain in the action from Canada West this coming Thanksgiving weekend as they head to the Okanagan Golf Club for the UBCO Invitational starting Sunday, October 10.e.
