UBC wins Canada West championships, Nobbs wins men’s gold

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan. – The UBC Thunderbirds are the class of the conference as the men’s and women’s teams won the Western Canada Cross Country Championships at Victoria Park in Saskatoon on Saturday afternoon.

Directed by Glynis Sim who won individual bronze, the T-Birds women’s team successfully defended their 2019 banner to claim their third consecutive Canada West title.

The Thunderbirds men’s team won their first championship since returning to competition from Canada West in 2018 as Thomas nobbs also won the individual gold medal and athlete of the year honors, finishing 30 seconds ahead of his teammate Tyler dozzi who took the money.

“It was a great day for the Thunderbirds,” exclaimed the UBC head coach. Laurier Primeau. “We had depth and we had a great race up front. We think it’s a great stepping stone on our way to the U SPORTS championships in Quebec in three weeks. Well done to UBCO with its women’s team and in particular its top two who ran a great race. “

These UBC Okanagan leaders Joanna Brown and Lauren McNeil put on a spectacular final as the first won individual gold finishing just two-tenths of a second behind her teammate.

Sim was not far behind to find his place on the podium, finishing the eight kilometer course in 29: 21.7.

Mackenzie campbell and Zoe Doorenspleet gave UBC three top ten, crossing the line in seventh and tenth respectively.

On the men’s side, Nobbs and Dozzi were joined on the podium by Eric Lutz of Calgary while Joshua Kozelj and Spencer hardy was fourth and fifth, respectively, while UBC won four of the top five.

Hardy’s fifth time in 25: 24.0 was the best among any first-year male runners as the Portland, Oregon native was named the conference rookie of the year.

For UBC Excellence, Assistant Coach Steve weiler was named male coach of the year.

As Primeau mentioned, the T-Birds will now be focusing on the upcoming U SPORTS National Championships which will be held on Saturday, November 20.e on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec.
